What soil is best for growing onions?

Soil is the most fundamental guarantee for high yields and harvests of crops, and green onions are also a crop that requires relatively fine soil management. Therefore, green onions need to be provided with suitable soil for growth before planting to ensure high yields.

Soil for onions

Onions do not have high requirements for the soil layer and have a wide range of adaptability. They can be planted in everything from sandy loam to clay soil. However, sandy loam has low organic matter content and poor water and fertilizer retention capacity. The planted onions are not crisp and tender and have a strong spicy taste. Clay loam has poor aeration, which is not conducive to root development.

Practice has shown that in order to obtain high-quality and high-yield green onions, they should be planted in loose soil with a thick soil layer, good drainage, and containing soil organic matter. The pH value is preferably 7.0-7.5. When the pH value is less than 6.5 or greater than 8.0, it will have an inhibitory effect on seed germination and main stem growth.

Method of mixing onion with soil

The soil for growing onions should be loose, fertile humus or compost soil. It can be replaced with peat soil or leaf mold. Appropriate river sand can be added to increase the soil's air permeability and drainage. Such soil is suitable for the growth of onions.

Onion soil replacement

Prepare soil suitable for onion growth in advance, and then add enough organic fertilizer or other fertilizers at the bottom of the pot. This can promote the rapid recovery of the onion's growth and is beneficial for vigorous growth in the later stage. Dig the onion out of its original place, clean the soil under the roots, and then replant it in new soil.
