Growing directions
Root cuttings or plant container specimens in well-drained, average to fertile soil in full sun to partial shade; weigela is a Chinese deciduous flowering shrub that has been a cornerstone of the North American spring garden since the Victorian era — producing masses of trumpet-shaped, 1-inch flowers densely covering the arching branches in late May to June in shades ranging from deep crimson-red and rose-pink to pale pink and white, depending on cultivar, at the same time as azaleas and late lilacs, creating one of the richest spring flowering displays available in zone 4–8. Modern cultivars have dramatically expanded the ornamental value beyond the original species, adding dark-purple, burgundy, or gold foliage to the flowering display: 'Wine and Roses' (deep-purple foliage, bright-pink flowers), 'Midnight Wine' (compact, dwarf, burgundy leaves, rose-pink flowers), and 'Sonic Bloom' series (repeat-flowering from spring through frost) are standout introductions. It attracts hummingbirds reliably. Tolerates partial shade acceptably. One of the easiest and most adaptable flowering shrubs for the temperate garden.
