Growing directions
Plant divisions or container plants in spring in well-drained, lean to moderately fertile, neutral to slightly alkaline soil in full sun; tall stonecrop (formerly Sedum spectabile, now Hylotelephium spectabile) is a classic late-season border perennial producing bold, flat-topped flower heads of tiny, star-shaped pink to mauve flowers from late summer through fall that attract monarch butterflies, bumblebees, and native bees in extraordinary numbers. The succulent, fleshy, grey-green leaves are attractive from spring through fall, and the dried seed heads remain ornamental through winter and provide food for birds. Excellent drought tolerance once established; the main enemy is wet, poorly drained, or rich soil where it rots. Popular cultivars include 'Autumn Joy', 'Matrona', and 'Neon'.
