Growing directions

Root leaf cuttings or offset divisions in well-drained cactus mix in bright indirect light to very low light; the snake plant (formerly Sansevieria trifasciata, reclassified to Dracaena in 2017) is one of the most forgiving indoor plants available, surviving weeks of neglect, poor light, and inconsistent watering that defeat most other houseplants. Water sparingly — no more than once every 2–3 weeks in winter and once a week in summer — allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings; root rot from overwatering is by far the most common cause of decline. In zone 9–12 it can be grown as an outdoor landscape plant in full shade to partial shade in very well-drained soil, where it forms bold architectural clumps of stiff, upright, green-and-yellow banded foliage to 4 feet tall. Note that the leaves are mildly toxic to cats and dogs if ingested.
