Growing directions
Grow in bright indirect to moderate shade; Satin Pothos tolerates lower light than most variegated plants and can maintain attractive foliage color even several feet from a window, though growth slows considerably in dim conditions. Scindapsus pictus is a climbing tropical vine native to Southeast Asia — Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Malaysia, Philippines, Sulawesi, and Sumatra — widely grown as a houseplant for its distinctive, heart-shaped, velvety-textured leaves decorated with irregular silver-gray patches and speckles. The silver variegation has an unusual quality: it appears slightly iridescent or three-dimensional against the dark, matte, blue-green base color, an effect created by air pockets beneath the leaf surface that scatter light — the same optical phenomenon that makes butterfly wings iridescent. The cultivar 'Argyraeus' has smaller, more compact leaves than the species with abundant fine silver spotting; 'Exotica' has larger leaves with more extensive, bold, irregular silver patches. Unlike true pothos (Epipremnum), Scindapsus has single leaves and no overlapping juvenile leaf stages when climbing. Its tolerance for low light, inconsistent watering, and indoor conditions — combined with the beautiful iridescent foliage — makes it a perennial houseplant favorite. Mildly toxic due to calcium oxalate.
