Growing directions
Plant in shallow, well-drained baskets allowing the furry rhizomes to drape freely over the edges; rabbit's foot fern is a Fiji native grown as much for its extraordinary rhizomes as for its lacy, dark-green, finely divided fronds — the long, surface-creeping rhizomes are densely covered with silvery-white to light-brown, soft, hair-like scales that have a silky, fur-like texture remarkably similar to a rabbit's foot, draping over the edges of hanging baskets in long, decorative tendrils. The finely dissected, triangular fronds provide a delicate, refined foliage texture above the unusual rhizomes. It is drought-tolerant compared to most ferns, preferring to dry slightly between waterings rather than staying constantly wet. An excellent houseplant and summer shade garden fern that performs well in bright indirect light to partial shade. The fern genus Davallia contains several species with similarly ornamental rhizomes, including D. trichomanoides (squirrel's foot fern) and D. canariensis (hare's foot fern). Easily propagated by cutting and planting rhizome sections.
