Growing directions

Plant in well-drained, fertile soil in full sun and provide a strong trellis or chain-link fence; the purple passion fruit vine grows rapidly and requires physical support for the tendrils. Unlike the cold-hardy native maypop (P. incarnata), this is a true tropical vine that produces the familiar large, purple, wrinkled fruits of commerce, intensely aromatic with sweet-tart yellow pulp. Fruits ripen and fall to the ground when ready — simply collect them from the ground. In zones 9b–11 plants produce heavily twice yearly, in spring and fall. The spectacular 3-inch flowers with purple, white, and yellow corona filaments are among the most intricate in the plant world and are visited by bumblebees, which are the most effective pollinators.
