Growing directions

Plant pips (root divisions) shallowly in fall or early spring in moist, humus-rich, slightly acidic to neutral soil in partial to full shade; lily of the valley is one of the most beloved and recognizable shade groundcovers in the world, producing two broad, ribbed leaves per stem and delicate sprays of tiny, perfectly bell-shaped, intensely and sweetly fragrant white flowers in late spring that are legendary in perfumery and bridal traditions. The plant spreads by underground rhizomes to form dense colonies that suppress weeds effectively. It goes dormant in summer; allow adequate space and companion plant to cover the bare ground. Thrives in cool, moist northern climates but performs poorly in the hot, humid deep South. All parts are extremely toxic — never confuse with wild garlic. 'Rosea' has pale pink flowers; 'Flore Pleno' has double flowers.
