Growing directions

Plant in deep, fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil in full sun in zones 10–12; jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) is a fast-growing tropical tree from India and Bangladesh that produces the world's largest tree-borne fruit — massive, spiky green-to-yellow pods weighing 10–80 pounds that hang directly from the trunk and main branches in a spectacular display of cauliflory. The flesh (arils) surrounding each seed is sweet, fragrant, and fiber-rich, eaten fresh when ripe or cooked as a meat substitute when unripe — a use that has made jackfruit globally popular as a plant-based protein source. Trees grafted from superior selections begin fruiting in 3–4 years and can produce 100–200 fruits per year on mature specimens. Plant in well-drained soil, as jackfruit is highly susceptible to root rot in waterlogged conditions; once established, trees are moderately drought-tolerant and grow vigorously in the humid tropics.
