Growing directions
Plant in full sun to partial shade in moist, deep, well-drained to seasonally wet soil; Green Ash is one of the most adaptable native trees in eastern North America and tolerates periodic flooding, clay soils, and urban conditions better than most hardwoods. It is the fastest-growing native ash species and provides dense shade and important wildlife value — the winged seeds are consumed by many bird species including finches and grosbeaks. All plantings of this species should be made with full awareness of the emerald ash borer threat: consult your local extension service for current biocontrol and treatment options and consider whether site conditions justify planting. Established trees need little care beyond occasional formative pruning of crossing branches in late winter; avoid wounding the bark unnecessarily, as entry points can invite opportunistic pests.
