Growing directions

Root stem cuttings by laying cut sections horizontally on moist potting mix or inserting upright sections in perlite and peat at 70–80°F; dieffenbachia grows vigorously in deep shade and tolerates the low-light conditions of interior spaces that defeat most ornamental plants, producing large paddle-shaped leaves strikingly patterned in cream, white, and various shades of green. Outdoors in zones 10–12, use in mass plantings under trees or along shaded foundations where its bold tropical texture creates lush contrast. All parts contain calcium oxalate crystals that cause intense burning and temporary loss of speech if chewed — keep away from children and pets, and wear gloves when cutting. Flush soil occasionally to prevent fertilizer salt buildup.
