Growing directions
Root stem cuttings or divide offshoots in well-drained, slightly acidic, fertile potting mix in bright indirect light to deep shade; Chinese evergreen is one of the most tolerant and adaptable of all tropical foliage plants, suited to interior conditions of very low light intensity that defeat most other tropical houseplants. The lance-shaped to elliptic leaves are produced in erect rosettes and may be plain dark green, or variegated in combinations of silver-gray, light-green, white, cream, pink, red, and orange depending on cultivar — modern breeding has produced cultivars in a remarkably broad color range. The plant tolerates irregular watering, low humidity, and dim fluorescent light with less decline than virtually any other ornamental plant, making it a staple of interior plantscaping in offices, shopping malls, and shaded building lobbies. It is one of several plants demonstrated in NASA clean-air studies to filter certain indoor air pollutants. 'Silver Queen' (silver-green), 'Emerald Beauty' (dark-green), 'Red Siam' (deep red-edged), and 'Super White' are widely grown selections. All parts toxic if ingested.
