Growing directions

Plant rhizome divisions in well-drained, humus-rich soil in deep shade to partial shade; cast iron plant thrives in conditions that defeat nearly every other ornamental, including dense root competition under established trees, poor drainage, and near-zero indoor light. The broad, glossy, deep-green strap leaves grow slowly but are extraordinarily long-lived and require almost no maintenance beyond the occasional removal of damaged foliage. Water sparingly once established — the rhizomes store moisture and rot in permanently waterlogged soil — and fertilize lightly once or twice per year with a balanced slow-release fertilizer. Divide congested clumps in early spring every 5–10 years to maintain vigor.
