Growing directions

Plant in partial shade to full sun in well-drained, slightly acidic, fertile soil; black raspberry is a native eastern North American cane fruit with intensely flavored, deep purple-black fruits that are prized above all other raspberries for their rich, complex flavor — more aromatic and concentrated than red or purple types. The canes are biennial, growing vegetatively the first year (primocanes) and fruiting in summer of the second year (floricanes), after which they die and should be cut out. New primocanes arise from the base annually. Unlike red raspberry, black raspberry spreads by tip-rooting: when the arching cane tips touch the ground in late summer, they root and form new plants. Harvest the hollow-centered fruits when they turn fully black — they release easily from the core. Excellent fresh, in preserves, syrup, and wine; also dried.
