Growing directions
Plant in full sun to partial shade in moist, fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic soil; Areca Palm prefers consistently moist conditions and will develop yellowing fronds (potassium deficiency) in the alkaline soils common across the Gulf Coast — acidify soil with sulfur and use palm-formulated fertilizer containing micronutrients. Dypsis lutescens (formerly Chrysalidocarpus lutescens) is the most widely sold palm in the US nursery trade and one of the most commonly planted landscape palms in zone 10-11 Florida, Texas, and Gulf South landscapes — the graceful, arching, feathery fronds on cane-like yellow-green stems form magnificent multi-stemmed clumps reaching 15–25 feet. The yellow-green color of the stems (giving 'Golden Cane Palm' its name) and the softly arching frond tips that sway in the slightest breeze create an exceptionally elegant tropical effect. Native to Madagascar, where it is now endangered in the wild due to habitat loss, Areca Palm has become one of the world's most cultivated ornamental palms. The NASA Clean Air Study ranked it as one of the best air-purifying plants, removing xylene, toluene, and formaldehyde from indoor air. Non-toxic to pets and children.
