Growing directions
Root semi-hardwood cuttings in summer or plant container specimens in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil in full sun to partial shade; glossy abelia is a semi-evergreen hybrid shrub that ranks among the most reliably long-blooming ornamentals for the Southeast and Gulf South, producing masses of small, funnel-shaped, white to blush-pink, pleasantly fragrant flowers continuously from late spring through hard frost — a bloom period of 5–6 months that few shrubs match. The small, glossy, bronze-tinged leaves are attractive year-round in mild climates. Hummingbirds and butterflies visit the flowers consistently. It is highly adaptable to soil conditions, tolerating heat, humidity, and urban pollution. Prune selectively in late winter to remove oldest canes and encourage vigorous, floriferous new growth. 'Kaleidoscope' (variegated yellow and green) and 'Confetti' (variegated pink-white) are popular selections.
